ANDRÉS Y JOSÉ, Andrés Sáenz y José Álvarez, Mérida (2020) - Habitáculos consists of a series of modified objects, whose configuration makes sense in terms of the community, and are activated in altered contexts of use. These objects are designed to give some meaning to public space, where two realities - social and health - now converge in strange material singularities. These subverted objects make sense in the group, their configuration tends to the whole; by making visible the consequences, traces, collisions, dysfunctions and contradictions of the present, they encourage the user to become aware of the global emergency situation by articulating the visible relationships between infrastructure, public spaces and adaptability. The project establishes the city as a stage, while the public space serves as a field of experimentation for the future demands of the contemporary condition, and of a normality that already seems strange to us.

ANDRÉS Y JOSÉ
Multidisciplinary studio focused on design, architecture, art and public domain, in search of new media and languages through research and experimentation of space and matter. Founded in 2015, based in Merida, Yucatan by Architects Andres Saenz C. and Jose Alvarez G.
Why should we talk about public space in an altered context?
Taking known objects, activities and circumstances out of the current reality questions us about our daily life, how they work and their effectiveness in use, opening channels of thought with a propensity to propose different solutions for different users without a single solution.
What is Habitáculos?
It is a series of reflections, thoughts and exercises that seek to domesticate and conquer public space through urban objects with the aim of changing public life and improving the quality of life within a city.
Adaptive devices that make sense in their overall configuration, creating community and accommodating more flexible everyday lifestyles, detonators of an adaptive city.
How were the objects presented chosen?
Intervene and inhabit the context from different scales and circumstances, taking as a basis the premises of accessibility, mobility, permeability, relationship with the context, interpersonal relationship, the community and the common good. From the access to a house with a mobile living space to the intervention of the exterior spaces of the city with objects that dialogue with it and offer spaces that generate activities.
It is fundamental for us to generate content that can impact the public conversation of our work within our discipline, creating community and making our work public, that can be debated and that can generate new ideas.
How does your practice relate to architecture, and where do you see its impact on the future of the discipline?
We carry out our architectural practice related to global design, understanding that from different scales it is possible to improve people's quality of life.
We see our work as a means to solve social problems and as an activator of social sense improvement, with practices that relate to their context and take the bases and guidelines from the place where they are implemented or created.
